The state inspection stuff was a great topic. You guys hit on the upsell/corruption thing and the way I think that’s handled is via “bait” cars and customers. If they screw up it’s a huge fine and possibly the loss of a business license.

Here in NJ it’s changed a lot over the past 10 years or so. Now it’s just an OBD2 scan for 1996+ cars.

We used to have a tailpipe test for 1995 or newer but that’s gonzo:

Beginning May 1, 2016, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission is changing the inspection requirements for certain vehicles. Due to the cessation of tailpipe emission testing, the following passenger vehicles now will be exempted from inspection:
Gasoline powered vehicles registered passenger, model year 1995 & older with a GVWR 8,500 pounds or less.
Gasoline powered vehicles registered passenger, model year 2007 & older with a GVWR 8,501 to 14,000 pounds.

Gasoline powered vehicles registered passenger, model year 2013 & older with a GVWR 14,001 pounds or more.

Good points all. I really wonder if the “bait” car thing happens really tho. I can see the government sending out sting units to shops, (at least in a place like Maryland). If it does happen it can ever be enough to stop it. Really I think it’s just most people are good people, and most mechanics are people. So most are gonna be mostly honest.

I tried to get a “friendly NJ sticker” from a close friend at a garage and he apologized and refused- because his boss got stung. So I guess it happens (or happened) here but I’m unsure of the frequency.
